09/07/2008Woman held captive, abused for two months after break-up

A 19-year-old woman was kidnapped and abused for two months because she broke up with her boyfriend.

9 July 2008

MANRESA - A 19-year-old woman, who was held for two months against her will because she had broken up with her boyfriend, was released on Tuesday from a hospital in Manresa in Barcelona province after suffering physical abuse from her captors.

Los Mossos regional police have detained three men and two women, all Gypsies, in the case. The five could be charged with kidnapping and coercion. One of the suspects, called Pascual, age 20, could also be charged with sexual assault.

The young woman was found by police authorities on Friday in a "deplorable state" inside a shack hiding under blankets.

The victim, who had had her hair shaved off, had visible bruise marks all over her body and head suggesting that she had been beaten with a chain as well as stabbed in her legs repeatedly with a knife.

Police are also investigating charges by the woman that she was abused sexually by a captor. The story apparently started when the woman decided to break up with her boyfriend and move to another home, where she was then held against her will.

In 2007, 75 women died in Spain due to domestic violence.
