Barcelona – Spanish police said Monday they have arrested a woman from Guatemala who faked her own kidnapping in order to spend more time away from her husband and with a man she had met on the internet.
The woman came to Spain on holiday on 22 July while her husband remained in Guatemala.
She then sent distraught messages to her husband pretending she had been kidnapped and was being sexually assaulted, police said in a statement.
Police located the woman after they were alerted by the Guatemalan embassy.
She first pretended to have escaped her assailant but medical tests found no indication she had been the victim of a sexual assault.
She finally admitted that she had made up the story in order to extend her holiday in Barcelona with her lover, whom she had met on the internet.
