11/11/2008Unions and companies agree on less working hours

The Dutch cabinet will meet to discuss the effects of the credit crisis on the Dutch economy next week.

11 November 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - Employers and unions have agreed on the main points of a proposed reduction of working hours for businesses affected by the global credit crisis.

The measure will probably be funded with money from unemployment benefits funds. In periods when businesses work at a slower pace, staff would either work fewer hours or attend training courses.

Next week, the cabinet will discuss the consequences of the credit crisis with the employers and the unions. Social Affairs Minister Piet Hein Donner has not yet commented on the proposed measures.

Earlier on Tuesday, trade union federation FNV presented a 10-point plan to protect workers from the results of the credit crisis. In addition to the plans involving unemployment benefits funds, the union argues for buffering healthcare, public transport and the postal services from market forces.
