The iPhone 3G third-generation multimedia cellphone will go on sale in Telefónica stores on 11 July.

MADRID - Leading Spanish telecoms operator Telefónica said Tuesday it would start selling Apple's new iPhone 3G third-generation multimedia cellphone across Spain from 11 July.

The iPhone 3G will go on sale at Telefónica's new flagship store in the centre of Madrid and at another 1,000 outlets across Spain.

Telefónica's British and Irish cellphone division Telefónica O2 is already selling the new iPhone 3G, which allows twice as fast networking as the first-generation iPhone, and has built-in GPS for expanded location-based services.

"The new 3G version of the iPhone that we will bring to Spain next 11 July offers new, more advanced and innovative features than its predecessor, and we expect it will enjoy the same success in Spain as it has in the UK and Ireland with Telefónica O2," Telefónica Chairman César Alierta said in a statement.

"We're excited to work with Telefónica, one of the world's leading carriers, to bring the iPhone to Spain," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said.

Telefónica operates in 24 countries and has a global customer base of 223 million. It said Tuesday the new Apple phone would drive growth in its 3G customer basis as has been the case in Britain and Ireland.
