28/07/2008Spanish justice ministry refuses 500 weddings in 2007

About 500 Spaniards and their foreign partners were refused a civil marriage licence in 2007 as their marriages appear suspicious.

28 July 2008

SEVILLE - The Justice Ministry is investigating 500 alleged marriages of convenience between Spaniards and foreigners, a trend that appears to be on the rise throughout the country.

Although there are no official figures, the Justice Ministry said that in 2007 alone, there were 449 cases of Spaniards being refused a civil marriage licence because they were suspected of being fraudulent. Figures for the first quarter of this year suggest that 2008 may end with 516 similar cases. That is a dramatic rise from the 70 cases recorded in 2000.

"In Andalusia alone we have recently investigated 84 suspicious marriage cases," said a national police spokesperson in the region.

"But there has also been a rise in mixed marriages that are sincere," stresses Pilar Blanco-Morales, director general of Registries and Notaries.
