09/07/2008Spanish actress seeks age restrictions at French bullfights

Actress Rossy de Palma demands that spectacles under 16 should not be allowed to attend bullfights and cites a similar ban in Spain.

9 July 2008

MADRID - The muse of many of Spanish film director Pedro Almodovar's movies has written to French President Nicolas Sarkozy demanding a bar on under-16s attending bullfights, an animal rights charity said Tuesday.

Cult actress Rossy de Palma, who appeared in films such as "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," wrote the demand on behalf of the Spanish chapter of the global Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA), citing a similar ban in her native homeland.

"How can we accept children seeing blood spilled, men torturing to death animals in full view without any concern?" she asked in the letter, made public by the charity.

In Spain, the home of bullfighting, spectacles are restricted to viewers over 14 years of age.

After meeting the SPA in September 2007, Sarkozy promised he would launch a debate on the issue.
