27/08/2008Spanair plane's black boxes sent to London

The two black boxes of the MD-82 plane will hopefully offer an insight into the cause of the crash that left 154 passengers dead.

27 August 2008

MADRID -- Two of the damaged black boxes of Spanair MD-82 plane which crashed last Wednesday have been sent to London to be analysed, the Civil Aviation commission investigating the crash said Tuesday.

The airplane crashed within seconds after taking off from Madrid’s Barajas airport and killed 154 passengers.

According to Francisco Soto, Secretary of the Civil Aviation Commission for Investigating Civil Aviation Accidents and Incidents, the boxes are still in relatively good condition, making it possible to examine them.

The black boxes were sent to Britain to help recover valuable data from the conversations that the pilots held before the crash, as well as flight information.

The commission expects a preliminary report to be issued within a month.

Sixteen people remain at hospital after two were released. A funeral mass will be held for the victims on 11 Sept.
