One trail of an Islamic terrorist cell broken up in Barcelona leads to the German city of Frankfurt.

28 January 2008

MADRID/BERLIN - One trail of an Islamic terrorist cell broken up in Barcelona leads to the German city of Frankfurt, according to a report in the Spanish daily El Pais on Sunday.

One of the potential suicide attackers had even travelled to Frankfurt a day ahead of his colleagues' arrest, El Pais said, quoting an informer who had infiltrated the group and given the tip-off leading to the arrests.

The group had planned attacks in Spain, Germany, France, Britain and Portugal, according to the report.

The German Interior Ministry referred to the Spanish authorities in connection with the report - but a spokesman in Berlin said such media reports would be taken seriously.

During a raid in Barcelona eight days ago, police arrested 12 Pakistani and two Indian suspects. Police were still searching for three potential suicide attackers believed to have been controlled by the Barcelona cell, it was said.
