13/11/2008Minister approves measure to prevent job losses

Dutch Social Affairs Minister says companies can reduce the number of hours their employees work.

13 November 2008

THE HAGUE - Dutch Social Affairs Minister Piet Hein Donner says companies who can prove that their turnover has declined significantly as a result of credit crisis are allowed to reduce the number of hours their employees work

Employees who work fewer hours will receive unemployment benefit as compensation. The decrease in the workweek may not last longer than 24 weeks.

It is hoped that the measure will help workers keep their jobs.

Currently, companies only received permission to reduce the workweek as a result of extraordinary circumstances such as a flood or fire.
