Supreme Court will not support any appeals for high prison sentences for some of the perpetrators.

MADRID - The Supreme Court will not support any of the main appeals filed by victims of the11 March 2004 train bombings in Madrid who are seeking higher prison sentences for some of the perpetrators.

Although the official report will not be released until next week, a majority of the court's public prosecutors oppose appeals to consider one of the terrorists, Abdelmajid Bouchar, one of the direct bomb planters, or to consider Rafa Zouhier anything more than an informer, Supreme Court sources said.

The decision was made earlier in April following a narrow vote in which seven Supreme Court prosecutors supported the appeals and nine rejected them. "But nothing is final yet," said the source.

Bouchar was convicted to 18 years in prison while Rafá Zouhier received a 10-year jail term, compared with the High Court prosecutor's request of 38,950 years for each of them.

The 11 March bombing trial, which began nearly three years after the bombing that left 191 dead and over 1,700 injured in Madrid's Atocha train station, put 29 defendants on the stand and heard testimony from 650 witnesses.
