A Spanish judge is looking into how two urns containing the remains of the Spanair crash victims were given to the wrong families.

MADRID -- A judge on Thursday opened an investigation into a mix-up of two urns containing the remains of people killed when Spanair flight JK5022 crashed at Madrid's Barajas Airport last week.

The urns were given to the wrong families on Wednesday by specialists attempting to identify the bodies of the 154 people killed in the crash.

One urn, numbered 104 containing the remains of a Spanish national, was given to a French family, who should have received urn number 134.

Officials, however, have insisted that the mistake had been spotted quickly and the mix-up solved.

"The incident, now resolved, was caused by the team dedicated to returning the remains of the victims to their families," a spokesperson for the Madrid High Court of Justice said, denying that the remains had been misidentified.

Judge Juan Javier Perez has nonetheless launched a probe into the mix-up to determine what went wrong.
