Activists are dropping huge pieces of rock into the North Sea off the German coast to prevent further environmental damage caused by deep trawling activities.

THE NETHERLANDS - Greenpeace activists are dropping huge pieces of rock into the North Sea off the German coast.

The operation is designed to stop European deep-sea trawling which the activists say causes major environmental damage. Greenpeace is pushing for only sustainable fishing to be practised in the area.

Dutch Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg has condemned Greenpeace, saying the activists are stopping European fishermen from earning a living. She believes the environmental group would do better to exert pressure through the normal channels.
