18/04/2008Gender violence office gets new head

The director of assistance for victims of domestic violence of the Andalusian regional government, Miguel Lorente, will take over the delegation.

18 April 2008

MADRID - One of Spain's leading forensic doctors has been appointed head of the government's Delegation on Gender Violence, replacing Encarnación Orozco who headed the unit during the last legislature.

Miguel Lorente, until now the director of assistance for victims of domestic violence of the Andalusian regional government, is due to take over the delegation this month.

He promised Thursday to bring the department's policies "closer to victims individually" and to "provide solutions that are adjusted to the reality of gender violence in Spain".

Lorente, a widely recognised expert on gender violence who researched the subject with the World Health Organisation (WHO), argued that society in general needs to understand more about the issue and show solidarity toward victims.
