29/05/2008FARC rebels were planning attacks on Colombians in Madrid

Email retrieved from laptop of senior FARC rebel Raul Reyes unveils the guerrilla group’s plans to attack Colombians living in Madrid.

29 May 2008

BOGOTA - The leftist guerrilla group the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has been planning to attack Colombians living in Madrid, according to information retrieved by that country's authorities. The plans reportedly come from a laptop belonging to a senior rebel, Raúl Reyes, who was killed in March by Colombian commandos in Ecuador.

The email that allegedly contains the information and which was found after authorities had sorted through 700 messages associated with Reyes, states: "I propose that you draft a plan to the comrade concerning an attack in Madrid."

The Colombian Embassy in Spain said that its ambassador will contact the Foreign Ministry to verify the authenticity of the report.

While the FARC are known to be active across different parts of Latin America, they have not carried out attacks on targets outside of Colombia.

Another email message recovered from Reyes' computer sent by the new FARC leader, Alfonso Cano, appointed after Manuel "Sureshot" Marulanda's death in March, discussed the benefits of carrying out "a military operation" against US President George W. Bush.
