Extra family time denied to female soldiers The soldiers were told that they hold unique positions and could not be granted reduced working day privileges – despite being permitted by law given they have young children.

MADRID - Fourteen members of the Spanish army based in Córdoba have seen their reduced working day - permitted under law given that they have young children - withdrawn without prior notice.

The news was broken through a letter sent from the commanding officer of their base.

According to Ministry of Defence guidelines introduced in 2006, "any military person who is legal guardian of a minor under the age of 12 [...] will have the right to a reduction of up to half their working day."

But according to the letter sent to members of the Córdoba unit, "the unique nature of their tactical position means their roles cannot be carried out by another person."

The letter informs them that they will be obliged to take part in two exercises, planned for May and June of this year.

Sources suggested, however, that the newly appointed defence minister, Carme Chacón, who is herself heavily pregnant, has given instructions that no woman in the forces should see her work-family balance interrupted.
