18 March 2008

MADRID - Any Basque street, park or public place that bears the name of an ETA member should be renamed, the attorney general's office said Monday in response to a query in relation to the name of a park in the Basque town of Hernani.

The advice of the attorney general's office was sought by central government officials in the Basque Country after they received a public petition requesting that the José Manuel Aristimuño Park in Hernani be renamed. The park was named in 1982 by the then radical nationalist town hall in honour of Aristimuño, who had died the previous year in a clash with police.

The naming, the attorney general's office said, should be declared "null" because it honours and pays homage to a dead terrorist.

The petition was organised by relatives of Jesús Velasco Zuazola who was killed in an attack perpetrated by Aristimuño's terrorist cell.
