25/02/2008ETA sets booby trap bomb near Bilbao

A shoebox size bomb exploded on Saturday next to a television repeater antenna outside Bilbao.

25 February 2008

MADRID - A shoebox size bomb exploded on Saturday next to a television repeater antenna outside Bilbao after authorities had received a telephone warning from the ETA terrorist organisation, officials said. No one was injured in the blast.

The device reportedly had a booby trap attached to it intended to injure bomb squad officers who were dispatched to the scene to defuse it, Interior Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba said. "I want to condemn this sinister trap which ETA set, one which the Basque police didn't fall into thanks to their professionalism and intelligence," he said. Using a bomb-defusing robot, the police found a cardboard box by a window at the installation in Amotegi, just south of Bilbao, at around midday. The blast caused damage to the building and the robot.
