8 February 2008

MADRID -  A court building in a Basque city in northern Spain suffered considerable damage early Friday in a bombing in which the militant Basque separatist group ETA was suspected.

Police said an anonymous caller warned of the blast shortly before the explosion in Vergara. Although the caller did not claim responsibility for any group, police said they believed ETA was behind it.

No one was injured.

A suspicious backpack was found at the site, and several security guards were evacuated from the building right before the blast, police said.

The force of the explosion not only damaged the facade of the court building but also nearby businesses and cars.

The ETA has killed more than 800 people in its campaign for a sovereign Basque state since 1968. A six- month attempt by the Spanish government to negotiate with the group collapsed in December 2006 over a car bombing that killed two people at Madrid's airport.
