12/01/2009Bomb explodes under car in Spain

Motive for the bombing has yet to be determined as the owner of the car holds no political office and is not a public figure.

MADRID – A bomb placed under a car in northwestern Spain exploded in the early hours of Monday, causing material damages but no injuries, police said.

The explosion happened at around 3:30 am (0230 GMT) in the town of Mos in Galicia, a rugged fishing region near Portugal which has its own regional government and language.

The owner of the vehicle holds no political office and is not a public figure, according to police who have not ruled out any motive for the bombing.

While not as well known or active as the Basque separatist group ETA, radical groups seeking independence for the Galicia region have sometimes used violence to promote their cause.

ETA, which has killed 825 people in a 40-year-old campaign for an independent Basque homeland, has also struck in Galicia in the past although it tends to focus its activity in the northeastern Basque region and surrounding areas.

The outfit usually targets politicians or members of security forces.
