03/11/2009Spanish unemployment rises for third month

The Spanish labour ministry says unemployment is up 2.6 percent and there are now 3.808 million job seekers in Spain.

Madrid – The number of people unemployed in Spain, one of the European countries worst-hit by the economic crisis, rose in October for the third month in a row, the government said Tuesday.

There were 3.808 million job seekers in the country last month, up 98,906, or 2.6 percent, from the level in September, the labour ministry said.

That followed rises of 2.2 percent in September and 2.4 percent in August, after three months of declines.

Spain entered recession in late 2008. Its economy, Europe's fifth biggest, has been hit particularly hard by the world economic crisis after a decade-long boom driven by the construction industry came to an end.

The government's method for calculating unemployment differs from that used by the National Statistics Institute, which estimated the number of jobless at 4.123 million at the end of September, with an unemployment rate of 17.93 percent, about twice the eurozone average.

The government has forecast that the rate will remain high, closing the year at 17.9 percent and rising to 18.9 percent in 2010.
