13 February 2008

MADRID – The owner of a restaurant in Bilbao has been detained by police after it emerged that he was forcing his illegal immigrant staff to work 55-hour weeks for a salary of EUR 230. The 58-year-old has been charged with violating the rights of his employees.

The officers, in conjunction with the regional labour and social affairs delegation, discovered the infractions of the law after carrying out an inspection a week ago. The staff were from countries such as Romania, Colombia and Bolivia.

The police also arrested two Bolivian citizens, aged 20 and 47, due to their illegal status in the country. All of the employees lacked social security coverage and were working eight hours on weekdays, 15 hours on Saturdays and were given just half an hour break at lunchtimes.
