20/05/2009Confirmed swine flu cases pass 10,000 mark: WHO

The number of confirmed swine flu cases in the world passed the 10,000 mark.

Geneva – The number of confirmed swine flu cases in the world passed the 10,000 mark for the first time, a World Health Organisation spokeswoman said Wednesday, as the total reached 10,243 including 80 deaths.

"There is an increase of 413 cases in the past 24 hours, with most in the United States with 346 new cases... and in Japan there are 51 new cases," WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told journalists.

The total notified by 40 countries since the outbreak was uncovered in late April included a total of 5,469 infections in the United States and a total of 210 cases in Japan.

One additional death from influenza was reported since Tuesday by the United States, where a total of six deaths were recorded, Chaib said.

A full table of the WHO's latest figures was not yet available.

The WHO data refers to laboratory confirmed cases reported by countries at 0600 GMT on Wednesday, and includes cases from previous days or weeks that have only just been confirmed by testing.

On Tuesday, the global tally of confirmed swine flu cases in 40 countries stood at 9,830, with 79 deaths.
