15/08/2005Digital traffic cams tested on Dutch roads

15 August 2005

AMSTERDAM — New digital cameras have replaced analogue speed traps on the A2 motorway in the Netherlands.

The public prosecutor's office announced earlier this month that the digital cameras would be tested on the route between Breukelen en Vinkeveen. Work began on installing the cameras on Monday and they will be operational within three days.

The new cameras mean that the speed traps will no longer need a regular supply of film and the images of speeding vehicles can be transmitted digitally without the need for processing.

The digital images will be of a better quality than those taken by traditional speed-trap cameras.

The cameras will be tested on the A2 for several weeks. Motorists who are photographed speeding by the new cameras will not be fined during this period.
