22/05/2007Baby hippo christened "Imani"

22 May 2007

ANTWERP – The baby hippopotamus born at the Antwerp Zoo on 10 May has been named "Imani." The name was announced on Tuesday during a visit to the zoo by Antwerp city councillor and hippo-lover Philip Heylen.

"Imani is a Swahili name and means hope and future," explained Ilse Segers, spokesperson for the zoo.

Imani is the first hippo to be born in the Antwerp Zoo in 20 years. She is mother Hermien's third baby. Both in 1985 and 1986 she gave birth to female hippos. Several miscarriages and stillbirths followed. Hermien was even suffering from post-natal depression for a time.
