09/07/2008Threatened strike action at Brussels Airport averted

Baggage handling firm Flightcare has stepped forward to reduce increased workload during the summer months in face of threatened strike action from unions.

9 July 2008

BELGIUM - The baggage handling firm Flightcare has agreed to take measures to reduce the pressure of work at Zaventem Airport, near Brussels.

The socialist trades union had threatened strike action if nothing was done help its members cope with the increased workload during the summer months.

Flightcare's management has now agreed to prolong the contracts of dozens of temporary staff, as well as taking on extra students to work at the weekends.

An average of 40 extra flights pass through Zaventem every day during the holiday period and this inevitably puts extra pressure on baggage handlers at the airport.

Flightcare baggage handlers staged a work to rule on Tuesday morning. However, this had few consequences for travellers at Belgium's busiest airport.
