10/04/2008Rogge, Chinese premier talked about Olympics

Details of the talk will be revealed to the Olympic committee on Thursday.

10 April 2008

BELGIUM - The president of the International Olympic Committee, Belgian Jacques Rogge, has spoken with Chinese premier Wen Jiabao. The conversation centred on the final preparations for the Beijing Olympics.

In recent days, the passage of the Olympic torch has attracted protests in connection with Chinese repression in Tibet.

No details of the talks have emerged, but Rogge will brief the Olympic committee on Thursday.

Ahead of the meeting the IOC President spoke with the VRT's Beijing correspondent, Tom Van de Weghe, and said that the progress of the Olympic flame would continue.

Still no decision on opening ceremony
Next month, the Belgian foreign minister Karel De Gucht will attend the inauguration of a special Belgian work of art that Belgium is donating to China on the occasion of the Beijing Games.

At the inauguration, De Gucht intends to raise the issue of Tibet and human rights across China.

The Belgian Government has not yet taken any decision about whether or not Belgium will be represented at the opening ceremony at the Games.

De Gucht is no supporter of a boycott and hopes the Europeans will be able to adopt a common stand at their meeting on 28 April.
