A raccoon was captured in a shopping centre in Dronten on Wednesday evening.

AMSTERDAM – A raccoon was captured in a shopping centre in Dronten on Wednesday evening. The animal was displaying aggressive behaviour and attacked an employee of the animal control service, a spokesperson for the service has reported.

The employee suffered a bite and scratches to his hand. The animal was most likely deliberately released.

The animal control service initially tried to capture the raccoon on Tuesday night after it had been spotted elsewhere in the town centre of Dronten.
 
The animal was sedated and kept at the animal control facility overnight.

On Thursday afternoon the raccoon was brought to the AAP foundation. A spokesperson for the foundation reports that the animal is approximately a year old and in reasonable health, though somewhat malnourished.

It is permitted to keep raccoons as pets in the Netherlands. Only animals threatened with extinction are banned. The raccoon is very common in North America.
