Police say he supplied four lots of night vision goggles and other advanced equipment to al-Qaeda camps near Afghanistan.

Karlsruhe, Germany -- German police have arrested a Pakistan-born man on terrorism charges, saying he supplied four lots of night sights and other advanced equipment to al-Qaeda camps near Afghanistan.

Aleem N, 45, who has German citizenship, had also offered to serve as a terrorist himself, federal prosecutors in the southern city of Karlsruhe said.

He faces six charges of supporting Islamist terrorists abroad. Police swooped on him Thursday, searching his home in a small German town, Germersheim. A magistrate remanded him into custody on Friday.

He allegedly visited the camps along the mountainous Pakistan- Afghan border four times between April 2005 and June 2007 to donate thousands of euros of money, binoculars, radio-communications sets and night sights.

The prosecutors said he also underwent training in one camp in the use of explosives, the basis of the fifth charge. The sixth charge was for recruiting a German-based person in 2006 to become a terrorist.

That person had "immediately traveled to a training camp in Afghanistan with N's letter of introduction."

Al-Qaeda was established as a network in 1989 by Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. The West has been trying to destroy it since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.
