It will be towed to the Thornton Bank, 30km off the West Flemish coast.

BELGIUM - The first of six wind turbines base towers has left the West Flemish coastal town of Ostend for the Thornton Bank on Saturday.

The wind turbine base will be transported 30km to the North Sea sandbank off the Flemish coast.

The project has attracted much public interest.

The Belgian prime minister Yves Leterme blew the starting whistle for the mammoth task of transporting the 44-metre high bases to their new home.
Once completed, the wind turbines will tower 184 metres above the North Sea.

The first turbine base should arrive at the Thornton Bank on Sunday morning.

The managing director of C-Power Filip Martens told the VRT that all six bases should be in place by the middle of June.

C-Power is the company behind the multi-mullion-euro project to provide enough wind energy to supply 600,000 homes.

A total of 60 wind turbines should be up and running by 2012.
