25/06/2008Dutch smokers down yet more cigarettes sold

Sale of tobacco and cigarettes are going up even though number of Dutch smokers keeps dropping.

25 June 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - Even though the number of Dutch smokers keeps dropping, sales of tobacco and cigarettes are going up.

At present, around 3.7 million people smoke tobacco - more than a quarter of the population - but data from Netherlands Statistics shows an annual average of 100,000 people who stopped smoking since 2000.

The increase in sales is probably caused by high prices in neighbouring countries. Many Belgians and Germans living in the border regions buy their cigarettes and tobacco in the Netherlands.

So why don't the Dutch RAISE the prices to be equal with Germany and Belgium OR are they too stupid to figure that out for themselves.

I think that the proven link between contracting lung cancer from smoking (something like 90% of all cases) stilll eludes the dutch. Most westernised affluent countries have hiked up the price of cigarettes both as a revenue raiser and to help fund the attendant medical costs associated with long-term smoking.
