10/10/2008Dutch MPs reject automatic organ donation

The Netherlands will not adopt an “opt out” program for organ donation, although there is a shortage of donors.

10 October 2008

THE HAGUE -- The lower house of the Dutch parliament rejected the proposal for automatic organ donation.

There is a serious shortage of donor organs in the Netherlands, and the average waiting time for an organ is four years. Groups representing people waiting for organs advocated an “opt out” system which registers citizens as donors automatically unless they specify otherwise.

A majority of MPs supported Health Minister Ab Klink in blocking the proposal.

Klink did agree to consider making organ donation forms more readily available. This plan, recommended by the Christian Democrats and the Labour Party, would make forms available in shops and other public places. At present, people must “opt in”, taking the initiative to register as organ donors.

Please provide a link to register. Four years is a long time to wait, especially if your child is involved!
