17 June 2008

BELGIUM - Four million boxes of counterfeit medicine were imported into Europe in 2007, a 50 percent increase from 2006.

"Counterfeit in all sectors is on the rise, but counterfeit medicine especially poses a threat to the consumer. We must take short-term measures to counter it," says Carl Devlies, state secretary for combating fraud.

Manufacturing counterfeit medicine is very profitable. The increase in counterfeit medicine trade has also been aided by the internet.

"Internet medicines can be brought on to the market anonymously," explains Carl Devlies.

Fraud in the health sector in Belgium accounts for about 1 percent of the annual healthcare budget.
