20/03/2008Brussels police use tear gas against Tibet demonstrators

The protesters were demonstrating in favour of human rights and autonomy for Tibet.

Brussels police on Tuesday used tear gas to disperse demonstrators outside the Chinese embassy in Brussels. The protesters were demonstrating in favour of human rights and autonomy for Tibet.

The country is currently occupied by China and recent protests in Tibet have triggered a clamp down by the Chinese authorities.

The demonstration in Brussels was a pretty noisy affair and the police intervened when it threatened to turn nasty.

Earlier in the day protesters also gathered outside the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels.

The demonstrators say they are launching an urgent appeal for the international community to assist the people of Tibet.

The Belgian organisation "Friends of Tibet" wants the EU to take up its responsibility and send a delegation to the former Tibetan capital Lhasa.

The Belgian Parliament's foreign affairs committee is discussing the recent clashes in Tibet on Wednesday.
