Belgium commemorates King Boudewijn’s death The former king of Belgium died 15 years ago on 31 July 1993 when he was on a holiday in Spain.

1 August 2008

BELGIUM – A commemoration service was held in Laken's Our Lady's Church to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the death of Belgium's King Boudewijn on Thursday morning.

King Boudewijn died of a heart attack on 31 July 1993 when he was on holiday in Motril, in Spain. He was staying in his Spanish residence with his wife, Queen Fabiola.

It was not until after his death that it became clear how much the Belgian people loved their king. The whole country mourned for several days.

Thursday 's mass was attended by Boudewijn's widow, Queen Fabiola, and also by King Albert, Queen Paola and Princess Astrid among others.

An estimated 1,800 people were inside the church to attend the ceremony. Others were waiting outside to catch a glimpse of the royal family.

The Royal Crypt in the church was open to the public on Thursday. Visitors could visit King Boudewijn's grave until 5 pm.
