"We have been instructed not to give out any information. It’s delicate and for the safety of the family we can’t give any details," a local Belgian representative said Monday of the abduction of Kurt Jansen.
Cancun media reported that a group of armed men had abducted Jansen as he left a nightclub overnight Friday. But local authorities said they could not confirm the reports.
"We have no confirmation on this issue. We have had no contact from the family or the consulate, nor any formal complaint," an official from Quintana Roo state told AFP.
Some 1,000 kidnappings were officially registered in Mexico in 2008, but independent experts put the number at three times higher, saying many families never contact police and instead deal directly with kidnappers.
