27/05/2008Belgian govt meets to discuss Congo crisis

Official notes, sent from Kinshasa to the Belgian prime minister, insisted on the closing down of consulates in Congo.

27 May 2008

BELGIUM - Prime Minister Yves Leterme received two notes from Kinshasa on Monday.

The first note expressed dissatisfaction of the Congolese regime on the RTL interview in which Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Karel De Gucht claimed that Belgium has the right to express its view on what is wrong in Congo.

In the second note, the Congo authorities insist on Belgium shutting its consulates in Bukavu and Lubumbashi.

The core cabinet of the federal government met to discuss on the escalating crisis with Congo on Monday evening.

The Congo authorities recalled its ambassador for talks and closed its consulate in Antwerp.

The Minister of Development Cooperation, Charles Michel, said that he would no longer support similar messages by De Gucht.

According to Michel, supporting messages of the foreign minister will only increase the risk of a final breakdown of relations with the Congo authorities.

The core cabinet of the federal government met on Monday to decide on which action to take.
