30/08/2009Belgian anti-globalist causes plane to divert

American aviation authorities forced an Air France plane to divert after they discovered that a Belgian anti-globalisation campaigner was on board. Paul-Emile Dupret works for the United Left Group in the European Parliament.

Mr Dupret was on his way to a conference in the Mexican coastal resort of Cancun.

He told the public broadcaster RTBF that he has been black-listed by the Americans and consequently is not allowed to fly through their airspace. 

Mr Dupret came to the attention of the US authorities because of his anti-globalist views. 

Since the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 in New York, the Americans have demanded passenger lists from all aircraft flying through their airspace.

Permission to fly over the US is refused if any of the passengers on board a particular flight is found to be black-listed.

This is plain ridiculous - people do not become threats simply because of their political views.
