30/04/200885 million cigarettes seized

85 million cigarettes seized Customs officials and tax department investigators estimate that at least two thirds of the cigarettes were imitations

30 April 2008

Dutch customs officials and tax department investigators intercepted approximately 85 million illegal cigarettes and 1,000 kilos of tobacco in 2007. They estimate that at least two thirds of the cigarettes were imitations. Of the 26 million destined for the Netherlands, 91 percent were proved to be fakes.

If all the illegal cigarettes and tobacco had reached the Dutch market as planned, it would have cost the country's treasury an estimated 12.7 billion euros in lost revenue.

Most of the seized tobacco products originated in China. Forty percent were destined for Germany and 25 percent for the British market.
