30/06/20081,000 demonstrate for regularisation of illegal immigrants

The demonstrators call for clarity regarding the regularisation of immigrants who do not have legal papers.

30 June 2008

BELGIUM - More than 1,000 people demonstrated in Brussels on Sunday, calling for the regularisation of immigrants who don't have legal documents.

The demonstrators called for clarity regarding the regularisation of immigrants who do not have legal papers. They complained that the government of Prime Minister Yves Leterme has still not made work of the regularisation of this group of immigrants.

The government accord included the intention to come up with clear criteria. The demonstrators demand that the government indeed draft criteria before 15 July.

"The desperation amongst the immigrants who do not have legal papers is growing, especially since they were promised clarity on their situation," says Pieter De Gryse of the Asylum and Migration Forum.

"If the criteria are clear and it is obvious that no regularisation is possible, then the people would at least know where they stand. Now these people are desperate- as you can tell by the immigrants who are in hunger strike in a Brussels church," says De Gryse.
