02/10/2009Second Belgian swine flu death

A 44-year-old woman from Hainaut died in hospital on Thursday after contracting the A/H1N1 virus.

According to a statement by the influenza commission, the woman was not a high risk case, and had not presented any other medical conditions. 

“She showed flu-like symptoms on 11 September. When her health worsened on 14 September she was admitted into hospital with breathing problems, and put onto an artificial respirator.”

“On 16 September it was confirmed that she had the swine flu virus. Her health did not improve and she died on 1 October,” said a spokesperson.

This is the second swine flu victim in Belgium, after a 34-year-old man from Antwerp died on 30 July.

Since the start of the epidemic, nearly 8,600 people have been affected by swine flu in Belgium, according to an estimation from the influenza commission.

They stressed that “the risk of dying from this flu is not higher than dying from seasonal flu.”
