31/10/2009Plea for stadium ban after insulting chants

The Dutch Football Association is calling for tougher measures against insulting chants in football stadiums.

The Netherlands - The Dutch Football Association is calling for tougher measures against insulting chants in football stadiums. The entire section of the terraces from which the chant emanated should be banned from the stadium for one match, association official Bert van Oostveen told Dutch TV.

The association thinks the clubs are not taking enough action against the chants, which are often racist in nature and directed against coloured players of the opposing side.

There are guidelines for dealing with what is called "verbal violence", but the Football Association says clubs are ignoring them.

The guidelines require the stadium announcer to caution the chanters over the public address system, and the stadium management should trace the people starting the chants.

A prosecutor specifically appointed to investigate transgressions in the professional football sector scrutinised 55 cases of chanting over the past three years.

It turned out that clubs failed to respond to the insulting chants in 35 instances.
