05/08/2009“A play scheme is not a fashion show”

Play scheme monitors in Leuven have noticed a worrying trend recently. A growing number of children do not want to join in the fun as they are afraid of getting their clothes dirty.

Like many other cities and municipalities in Belgium, Leuven organises play schemes for children during the school holidays. This provides children with the opportunity to play with other boys and girls of a similar age and even go out on trips.

Children playing outside are usually a recipe for dirty hands and even dirtier clothes.

However, some parents send their children to play schemes in their Sunday best and get annoyed with their offspring if they come home dirty at the end of the day.

Leuven City Council decided that it was time to act and it has launched a campaign to persuade parents to dress their children in such a way that it doesn't matter if they get dirty. A special song has even been composed to bring the message home.

The Leuven City councillor responsible for youth and family stated that children should be made aware that "a play scheme is not a fashion show".
