Food safety and consumer groups urge Spain to increase controls on Chinese products.

26 September 2008

MADRID -- The Spanish Agency of Food and Nutrition Security Thursday recommended that regional authorities increase controls on Chinese products. Spain does not import milk products from China but the chemical melamine may be found in packaged foods.

FACUA (Association of Consumers and Users in Action) on Thursday warned that Chinese candies thought to be contaminated with melamine are still being sold in Asian stores across Spain despite the melamine health scandal in China.

El Pais Thursday bought packets of White Rabbit Creamy Candies in a Barcelona store. This brand is among those containing high concentrations of melamine, a substance that caused the deaths of four Chinese infants and affected 53,000 more.
