Steep rise in cyclists hurt on our roads

The figures come from the Belgium Traffic Safety Institute.

The Institute believes that the unusually fine weather this spring may be at the root of the rise.

As a result of the mild winter and the sunny spring more people than usual took the bike.

The Institute also warns of an increased number of older people being involved in accidents, often because of poor hearing that makes them more vulnerable.

Traffic expert Johan De Mol warns that a structural approach to our roads is needed if the number of cycling fatalities is to be reduced.

Mr De Mol accuses some municipalities of setting out unsafe cycling paths just so that they can create more parking places.

He is pressing for an audit of the country’s cycling infrastructure.
