31/08/2009Four injured at Belgian palace after insect stings horse

Four people were hurt on Sunday outside the royal palace in Brussels when two horse-drawn carriages collided after one horse was stung by an insect, a palace spokesman said.

The driver was unable to control the injured horse and ran into the back of a carriage he was following as part of events to mark the royal couple's golden wedding anniversary, spokesman Pierre Emanuel De Bauw said.

None of the royal family were involved in the incident.

"The carriages were meant to help transport people who could not walk easily during the parade," De Bauw said.

One of injured was treated at the scene by the staff of a military ambulance. The three others were taken to hospital, two of them with suspected broken bones, he said.

More than 200 people had been invited to the palace in Laeken near Brussels for events to mark the golden wedding anniversary of King Albert and Queen Paola, as well as the celebrations of other Belgian royal couples.

The royal couple wed on July 2, 1959, and 69 other couples who married the same day were among those invited to the palace on Sunday. In recent years, the palace has routinely opened its gates to a number of guests at the end of the summer holidays.
