19/09/2008Ferry will resume between Scotland and Belgium

A new operator will take over the Rosyth-Zeebrugge route in spring 2009.

19 September 2008

ROSYTH – A new operator is to take over the Rosyth-Zeebrugge route in next spring, announced Scotland First Minister Alex Salmond on Thursday.

The Netherlands-based Norfolkline will resume the ferry service between Scotland and Belgium in April or May 2009.

The previous operator, Greek-based Superfast Ferries announced earlier this year it was pulling out of the route as it was not profitable. The last ferry sailed on Saturday.

There will be three departures from each port every week.

Kell Robdrup, managing director of Norfolkline, Ferry Division, stated: “We understand the importance of this service to both passengers and freight customers in Scotland and the Continent. With the introduction of a brand new ferry, Norfolkline can provide a comfortable and environmentally friendly crossing.”

The new vessel, currently under construction, will have lower fuel consumption and CO2 emission. The vessel will comply with the latest requirements of International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.
