22/09/2008Brussels celebrates heritage day

Some of Greater Brussels' most interesting buildings from the past 50 years opened their doors to the general public over the weekend.

22 September 2008

BRUSSELS -- Following heritage day in Flanders last Sunday; it's the turn of Greater Brussels to put some of its most interesting buildings under the spotlight.

The theme of this year’s heritage weekend is based on the theme 50 years on from the 1958 World Fair and is named “Before and after Expo 58”.

A total of 80 buildings ranging from a church, a synagogue and a Masonic hall to swimming pools, schools and a car showroom took part in the heritage weekend.

Post war modernist architecture is the central theme.

A lot of attention was given to the remains of the 1958 World Fair at the Heizel site in the Northwest of the city where visitors could take guided walks around the former site.

The American Theatre that houses the some of the VRT’s radio and TV production facilities was also open the public.

One of the biggest attractions was the Modelwijk social housing scheme in Laken.
Visitors were allowed onto the roofs of the blocks of flats to enjoy a panoramic view of Brussels and the surrounding area.
