The 80 years old was operated on her thyroid gland.

BRUSSELS - Belgium's Queen Fabiola, the widow of king Baudouin, has undergone surgery at a Liege hospital and will stay there under observation for a couple of days, a royal spokesman said Sunday.

"Queen Fabiola is at the Liege University Hospital Centre where she underwent a planned benign operation," spokesman Pierre-Emmanuel De Bauw told AFP.

He did not give details about her condition.

Fabiola, who is 80 years old, was Belgium's queen consort between 1960 and 1993.

French-speaking private RTL-TVI television said Fabiola was operated on her thyroid gland on Thursday.

The thyroid regulates the body's metabolism.
