Belgian drugs gang released on technicality

A farmer from Zandvoorde, near Ieper (West Flanders), his wife and daughter and three Brazilian nationals were all released.

Magistrates decided to free the six at the request of the defence council.

The defence lawyers argued that the search warrant used could not to be found in the case file and, furthermore, no details were given as the reason for the search.

"All is not lost"

The Justice Minister Stefaan De Clerck (Flemish Christian Democrat) told the VRT that he is disappointed with the descision to release the suspects.

However, he believes that they can still be brought to justice.

"I think that everything will be done to see how the evidence collected can be used. I don’t wish to say any more other than that I hope the judicial authorities do their job.”
