BRUSSELS – Foreigners are signing up in increasing numbers to fight for the Belgian army, it was reported on Wednesday.

The radio and TV company RTL said 292 EU citizens had applied to be a soldier or officer since Belgium opened its doors to nationalities from European countries in January 2004.

The majority of them come from France, with 78 applicants; the Netherlands, with 70; and Italy, with 68.

Two Luxemburgers, three Greeks, an Austrian and a Pole also requested to join.

So far, 20 soldiers and officers have been recruited.

The biggest hurdle to foreigners getting a job with the forces is a lack of French and Dutch.
